Frances Fok,  Landstown H.S. Governor’s STEM & Tech Academy, VA

Each year, students at Landstown study Into the Wild, the inspiring story of Christopher McCandless. This year, we were privileged to have Chris’s sister, Carine, visit with us to share her insights on the book and her brother. My students gained these insights and much more from their interaction with this remarkable lady. They learned that “courage can go a long way,” “to live every moment to the fullest,” and the simple yet profound lesson that they “want to smile.” Carine McCandless has the incredible ability to impart these weighty lessons on adolescents who often block out adults. My students connected with her, and as a result, they learned lessons that transcend any classroom’s walls.
